BIOvative: Redefining the Future of Waste

Introduction

This article invites us to rethink our relationship with plastic and waste, with BIOvative leading that conversation.


Most of us never think twice about a bin bag. We buy it, fill it, tie it up, and throw it away. Once it disappears from our doorstep, we tend to believe the problem has disappeared with it. We convince ourselves that it is no longer our responsibility.

We are mistaken.


Perhaps we are living through a different kind of pandemic: an "out of sight, out of mind" pandemic.


Recently, I heard an idea that has stayed with me ever since: the invention of the bin was, in many ways, a glitch in the matrix. A bin does not exist in nature. There are no bins in deserts, forests, rivers or oceans. Waste, as we know it, is a human invention born from a system that has become fundamentally disconnected from the natural world.


This is true; in nature, the concept of waste does not exist. Every discarded leaf, fallen branch, dead organism and animal excrement becomes a resource for another living organism. One species' waste is another species' survival. Natural ecosystems operate through continuous cycles of renewal, where nothing is truly wasted.


All natural resources and raw materials used to create something are recognisable by Nature and are therefore reintroduced organically.

Now, when we throw something man-made away, however, it does not cease to exist. It merely disappears from our view. That simple realisation reveals just how disconnected many of us have become from the consequences of the waste we generate.


Waste does not cease to exist simply because it has been collected. It is merely transferred elsewhere: to landfill, an incinerator, a recycling facility, a river, the ocean, or increasingly into the microscopic fragments of plastic now found in soils, waterways, food, drinking water, the atmosphere, wildlife, and even the human body.

As plastic ages, exposure to sunlight, oxygen, heat and mechanical abrasion causes it to fragment into progressively smaller particles. Virtually every type of conventional plastic will eventually become microplastics and, over time, even nanoplastics. Once dispersed throughout the environment, these particles are extraordinarily difficult, often impossible, to remove completely with current technologies.

Some plastics may persist in the environment for centuries, continuing to fragment rather than truly disappear.


Few everyday products illustrate the contradictions of our modern consumption model better than the humble bin bag. Unlike a bottle, a food container or a piece of packaging, a bin bag is manufactured with a single purpose: to become waste itself. Its useful life is measured in hours or days before entering a waste stream from which it is unlikely ever to return as the same product.

It is a product designed to carry waste, only to become waste immediately afterwards.


That was never the intention behind its invention. Yet today, it perfectly symbolises a linear economy that has normalised disposability over responsibility. The truth is not always comfortable but it is always worth knowing. I believe the truth will set you free from ignorance and give you a greater sense of pride and responsibility, because the earth is yours too!

Plastic's True Credentials

This year (2026) marks 164 years since the invention of Parkesine, the world's first man-made plastic, created by Alexander Parkes in 1862. Derived from cellulose (plant material) treated with nitric acid and solvents, Parkesine represented a remarkable scientific achievement. Although its commercial success was limited and the material degraded relatively quickly, it marked the birth of the plastics industry.


Forty-five years later, in 1907, Belgian-American chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland invented Bakelite, the world's first fully synthetic plastic. Unlike Parkesine, Bakelite required no naturally occurring polymers. Manufactured entirely from petroleum-derived phenol and formaldehyde, it was heat-resistant, electrically insulating and exceptionally durable. Its invention is widely regarded as the beginning of the modern plastics age.


Most of the familiar plastics we know today appeared during or shortly after the Second World War, such as:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in 1926 (estimated lifespan of 1000 years)

  • Polystyrene or Styrofoam (PS) in 1931 (estimated lifespan of 1000 years)

  • Polyethylene or Polythene (PE) in 1933 (estimated lifespan of 500 years)

  • Nylon in 1935 (estimated lifespan of 400 years)

  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in 1941 (estimated lifespan of 500 years)

  • Polypropylene (PP) in 1954 (estimated lifespan of 500 years)


All the plastic ever produced on the planet still exists.


Ironically, using plastic was never considered an environmental sin. Quite the opposite. Early plastics were celebrated as a conservation breakthrough. They offered alternatives to ivory, tortoiseshell, horn, shellac, and exotic hardwoods, reducing pressure on wildlife and scarce natural resources. At the time, plastics represented innovation, efficiency, and progress.

Yet one of humanity's greatest material inventions gradually became one of its greatest environmental challenges.


As plastic use grew, inexpensive fossil-fuel-based plastics became ubiquitous, enabling a global culture of disposability. Products designed to last centuries increasingly began to serve purposes lasting only minutes, hours, or days.


Plastic is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. We may never eliminate it, but every meaningful reduction represents a victory worth pursuing. And that is why I write these blogs. Not to please you or to deceive reality, but for change.

Since the 1950s, an estimated one trillion plastic bin bags have been manufactured worldwide. Although many are "technically recyclable" because they are made from polyethene, the reality is very different. Most are not properly sorted and are contaminated with food waste or mixed refuse, making collection, sorting, and recycling economically and technically challenging.



As a result, the overwhelming majority are either sent to landfill, incinerated or lost in the environment, commonly referred to as "environmental leakage". Globally, only a tiny fraction of plastic bin bags (less than 2%) are recycled back into new products, and in many regions, the practical recycling rate is close to zero.


Global plastic production exceeds 400 million tonnes per year, adding fuel to an already burning inferno, leaving our future generations an overwhelming legacy of pollution. These plastics fragment into smaller and smaller particles, contaminating rivers, oceans, soils, food systems, wildlife, and ultimately ourselves.


This is why the conversation about waste bags matters and has to happen right now!

It is not simply about one disposable product. It is about questioning a system that normalises manufacturing items with lifespans measured in hours from materials designed to persist for centuries.


This article is not about assigning blame. It is about understanding how society became dependent on disposable plastics, why that model is increasingly incompatible with a resource-constrained and climate-conscious world, and how innovative companies such as BIOvative are challenging the assumption that convenience must come at the expense of the planet. It is about picking a side and acting on behalf of our planet and our future.

I sat down with BIOvative's founders, Janine and Uwe, from Germany, for an intimate conversation about the company's journey and the philosophy behind its products.


BIOvative's story began over a decade ago with a simple yet profound realisation: even environmentally conscious households generate significant amounts of unavoidable plastic waste. Something had to change - for themselves, for their family, and for the planet they wanted future generations to inherit.


Their personal observations reflected a much larger global reality. Few products illustrate this central contradiction more clearly than the humble bin bag, something manufactured to hold waste, that immediately becomes waste itself. Its useful life lasts only hours or days before it is discarded.

What a waste, quite literally.

Designing Products for Real-World Sustainability

Like many environmentally conscious consumers, I have occasionally fallen into the trap of buying products labelled "eco""biodegradable" or "made from recycled materials", only to discover later that the claims were incomplete, misleading or taken out of context.


It took me months of reading scientific literature, carrying out my own life-cycle assessments, and researching manufacturing processes before I felt confident that the products I was choosing genuinely reflected the environmental values I wanted to support.


For most people, that simply isn't realistic. Few have the time to scrutinise scientific studies, compare manufacturing practices, or investigate supply chains before buying something as ordinary as a bin bag. As a result, many people never take the first step towards more sustainable choices, and I want to believe this is not because they don't care, but because they don't know who or what to trust.


That is precisely why we write these articles at Green Embassy. I would be a hypocrite to work with Nature, make money from Nature, and then fail in this department. Doing right by Nature matters to me deeply; it keeps me up at night.

Many bin bags are marketed as recyclable because they are manufactured from polyethylene (PE). Technically, this is true. In practice, however, the story is far more complex.

Once used, refuse sacks are usually contaminated with mixed household waste, making them difficult and often uneconomical to collect, sort and recycle. Thin plastic films can also interfere with sorting equipment at recycling facilities, which is why many municipal recycling systems either discourage or reject them altogether.


The result is a significant gap between technical recyclability and actual recycling.

This raises an important question. Where does the greatest environmental impact occur? During production, during use, or when the product reaches the end of its life?


The reality is that every stage of synthetic products, plastic included, carries an environmental cost.

  • Manufacturing consumes raw materials and energy.

  • Transport generates emissions.

  • Disposal can lead to pollution if the material is not recovered appropriately.


Yet perhaps the greatest missed opportunity occurs when a material that could potentially remain within the circular economy is instead discarded into landfill or released into the environment, all because we failed to dispose of it properly or contaminated it. This represents one of the greatest inefficiencies of our modern economy and the ignorance of our society.

Science has already shown us the consequences of continuing on our current path.

It has also shown us that alternatives exist.

The question is no longer whether we know enough to act.

The question is whether we choose to adopt them.


Will we continue to accept a system that treats our planet as disposable, or will we choose responsibility over convenience, action over indifference, and hope over helplessness?

The future is not something that simply happens one day.

It is something we carve through the choices we make today.
